Intellect ITs response to Prime Minister’s Announcement of Cyber Attack

Intellect IT welcomes the coverage given by the mainstream media to the Prime Minister’s announcement last week about sophisticated, state-based cyber-attacks happening on Australia. For us, it is a timely reminder of the importance of our work and our service offerings that address exactly the sort of risks outlined by the PM.

Background

On Friday, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that Australia is being targeted by a “sophisticated state-based cyber actor”. It is the sort of wake-up call we constantly need to remind

The Federal Government’s cyber watchdog the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has released the following advisory notice concerning the attacks.

Summary

The ACSC advisory refers to the threat actor using known vulnerability exploits targeting Internet facing systems. The actor has also adopted spear phishing techniques via email to lure users into following links to credential harvesting websites or to download malicious files.

ACSC Recommendations

The ACSC has made two clear recommendations to mitigate risks against these cyber-attacks.

  • Prompt patching of internet-facing software, operating systems and devices
  • Use of multi-factor authentication across all remote access services. Including:
    • web and cloud-based email
    • collaboration platforms
    • virtual private network connections
    • remote desktop services.

The ACSC has made a further recommendation to organisations to consider implementing the Australian Signals Directorate Essential Eight controls. This set of controls is considered by the ASD to be the gold standard for organisations to aim towards in preparing against cyber threats.

How Can Intellect IT Help?

The guidance from ACSC is clear – the best defence against these types of attacks is:

1. keeping your systems up to date

and

2. two-factor authentication

Intellect IT can help make both recommended mitigations easy for you.

For our Expert Care customers, we patch all end user devices and servers that are covered by your service agreement. We work hard to keep your systems up to date safely so that you do not have to. If you would like to explore the benefits of this service, please contact us on 1300 799 165 or sales@intellectit.com.au

We can deploy two-factor authentication across your organisation as well. We have implemented two-factor authentication across our own company and have been steadily helping clients deploy it within their organisations as well. We are experienced, and we can work with you to make the transition to two-factor authentication as pain free as possible.

As an additional layer of protection, we also recommend leveraging Cylance Optics. This powerful threat detection and response tool works alongside Cylance Protect to identify and stop attacks if they make it through to your system.

If you have any questions, concerns, or if you would like assistance ensuring your environment is patched and secured with two-factor authentication, please contact us on 1300 799 165 or sales@intellectit.com.au.

Through our partnership with the ACSC we will be briefed in detail about this advisory notice by the ACSC in the coming days. We will forward on any relevant information where appropriate.
