Four best practices for enterprise mobility

Enterprise mobility is all about improving the customer experience and helping your staff become more productive by allowing them to work from any device in any location.

There are many different ways to develop a mobility strategy for your business and recently zk Research published their recognised best practices. The full report is available for download and here are the key recommendations:

1. Organise your IT mobility team to represent both Line of Business and IT priorities

You need input from your Line of Business leaders, your IT leaders and ideally your C-level executives. Cross-business representation is key. For example, if your organisation’s goal is to reduce headcount and become more operationally efficient, your Line of Business leader might focus on what new services are required to improve productivity and your IT team can then focus on how to support these new services in the most cost efficient way.

2. Build your business case on business opportunity rather than purely RoI

Quite often an IT team looking purely at RoI will prioritise decisions based on dollars and cents without considering other factors such as new revenue streams and customer satisfaction. Sometimes revenue opportunities should take precedence. For example a mobility solution may help you increase the number of customers you can service each day.

3. Implement an IT self-service model

These days consumers are very comfortable with IT self-service and in many cases they would prefer to service their own device or laptop instead of leaving it with the IT help desk.

This change in mindset is a big hurdle for some IT teams to get their head around because traditionally IT would provide technical support for all issues, big and small.

When an IT self-service model is done right it cuts down help-desk calls and improves user satisfaction.

4. Leverage both cloud and on-premise solutions

Cloud drives mobility and mobility drives cloud, but cloud is not the only answer. On-premise solutions have a place and when it comes to enterprise mobility you want to live in a hybrid world where some technologies reside in the Cloud and others in the local data centre.

Building the platform

Once you have devised your Enterprise mobility strategy then you can start to design and implement your platform. zk research offers the following tips for implementation:

  • Support a broad set of application delivery models. Not everything is best served from the Cloud and there are many user devices to consider.

  • Focus on optimising the user experience

  • Centralise your security policies

  • Address the increasing threats posed by mobility

  • Deploy a robust, scalable WiFi network. WiFi needs to take on characteristics as the wired networks with similar speed and uptime.

  • Watch out for spikes in mobile carrier service costs
