The Creators Update is the first major upgrade to Windows 10 since the Anniversary Update in 2016. There’s plenty of useful improvements, but here’s four enhancements that can help save you time and increase productivity:
- Windows Update Restart Options
A common complaint about Windows 10 was the automatic restart so it could finish installing updates, and the fact a user could do nothing about it once the update process had started. Besides wasting time waiting, automatic restarts could potentially result in lost work, interrupted presentations, and other inconveniences. There are ways to postpone this, but the settings have to be configured in advance. And very few users knew how. The new options in the Creators Update give back control over when Windows installs updates that require a restart. Notifications can now be displayed when Windows is ready to install one of these updates, and present a user with three options:
- Restart now: Your computer will reboot right away, so be sure all your work is safe.
- Pick a time: Schedule a specific day and time for Windows to reboot your computer. At that desired time, you will again have the ability to reschedule if needed.
- Snooze: Delay an update for three days, and receive another notification. Click this button as many times as you like, but eventually this button’s label will change from “Snooze” to “Remind Me Tomorrow”.
- “Storage Sense” For Disk Space
“Storage sense” automatically frees up disk space. Enable this feature and Windows will delete unused temporary files, and files that have been in the Recycle Bin for more than 30 days. Or you can set this feature to delete only the unused temporary files or the old Recycle Bin files. Access Storage Sense through settings, system, storage, and click on Storage Sense.
- Easier to Add Bluetooth Devices
The old way to add any Bluetooth capable peripheral was a pain. But in the Creators Update the Bluetooth page and the Connected Devices page have been merged to form the “Bluetooth & Other Devices” page. Hallelujah! Now you will know exactly where to go when you need to add or remove a connected device. You’ll find the new page in the “Devices” section of the Settings app.
- “Night light” Feature.
Using electronic devices at night can interfere with your ability to fall asleep once you’re in bed. This is caused by the blue light emitted from device screens. Microsoft realised that a lack of sleep is detrimental to productivity, and your health, and introduced the “Night light” feature in the Creators Update. Use it to automatically reduce the amount of blue light emitted by your screen after sundown. It’s also customisable, to set it up open the Settings app, select “System”, choose “Display”, and click “Night light”. You can specify how much blue light you want to eliminate and when the Night Light should kick in. Also, you can manually turn it on or off using the “Night light” button in the Action Centre.
